The Naughty Good Boy Pony

Abby and I went for a 3 mile trail ride yesterday in the cornfields near the barn. She rode, and I walked next to her in case of any emergencies. Jeepers, our 23 year old 'Mystery Breed' pony, was as good as gold on the trail ride. He usually is a very good boy. But when he's naughty, he's reeeeeeeeeally naughty.

After the 1 1/2 hour trail ride we went back to the barn and took all Jeep's tack off. Abby was putting the tack away and getting a drink of water and I was going to bring the pony back to his paddock. It's a really long walk back to the paddock, so I usually throw the lead line (that purple rope in the above picture) around the pony's neck and ride him back to his paddock. So here I am, with my feet dangling some where around the pony's knees, and he takes OFF running for his paddock, lunging past the picnic tables that are set up in the grass area next to the barn. I haul back on my (useless) rope and the sneaky little bugger ducks his head down, whirls in a circle next to the picnic table, and bucks. I sat the first two bucks, but by the third I knew I was headed for the grassy knoll and I bailed off sideways. I landed, get this, SITTING on the bench next to the picnic table while the imposing Pony Studmiester galloped off into the barn looking for his buds. Of course even though I ended up sitting, it doesn't discount how I hyper-extended my elbow on the table when I landed, and it doesn't discount my ass bouncing OFF the table before coming to it's considerable rest on the bench.

Yes, for those of you wondering, I did go and catch the little bugger and rode him back to his pasture. I will NOT be defeated by a 12.1 hand pony... at least not twice in one day. He trotted like a gentleman the whole way back... like the incident right before had never happened.

You may have the last word but he has the last snicker!! I believe in the end it is Pony - 1, Mary - 0.

If you've never been tossed off a horse, you just aren't trying.

Hot damn, that means I try really really hard.
Honestly, I was so much better at this when I was younger. My horse dumped me last March and gave me a concusion, and now my 6 year old's pony sent me for a picnic.
Why did I fall and never get hurt when I was a teenager? Or, more to the point, why does it hurt so much NOW?

Check the mirror. You aren't a teenager anymore. EVERYTHING hurts the older you get. Sorry.

Just remember, as much as it hurts, it could be much worse...you could have landed in a manure pile.
